James H. Powell Jr.
(August 12, 1933 - September 2, 2017)

On Saturday, September 2, 2017, the mortal chains binding James H. Powell Jr.  to this earth were broken when God called him home.   Mr.
Powell, a lifelong resident of Montgomery County, Mississippi, departed this life peacefully at the Country Meadow personal care facility in
Greenwood, Mississippi.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Henry and Lois Powell; a sister, Shirley P. Lamb; his son-in law, Dick Levy; a son, Timothy Baker
Powell; and a grandson, Jay Powell.   He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sarah B. Powell; son, Jimmy Powell (Glenda) of Duck Hill;
daughters, Belinda P. Levy of Shreveport, LA, Sharon Boler (Dr. Mike) of Greenwood, Beth Storey (Barry) of Augusta, Georgia; a sister, Wilma
Denney of Dothan, AL; eleven grandchildren, Shannon Bloom, Sara Elise Johnson,  Blake Powell, David Levy, Sarah Clair Breedlove, Phillip
Levy,  Dr. Michael T. Boler, Dr. Baker Boler, Mary Beth Hardy, Shelby S. Blackburn and Lang Storey; and thirteen great grand-children.  He is
also survived by loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, and a host of long-time friends.

James was 84 years of age at the time of his death and he and Sarah were married for 64 years.  He worked over 20 years as a Production
Control Manager for Rockwell International in Grenada, Mississippi, and served a total of 34 years in the United States Army in combined
active duty and National Guard service.   During his military service James commanded the National Guard Field Artillery Battery in Grenada,
Mississippi, the 114th Field Artillery Battalion and the 631st Field Artillery Brigade.  He began his military service as a private and prior to
retirement achieved the rank of Army Brigadier General.  After retirement, he resumed a lifelong love of plants and farming.   He and Sarah
operated a greenhouse and nursery and started a small blueberry farm.

James was a member of the Duck Hill Baptist Church; served on the Board for the Eskridge-Rose Hill Water Association for over twenty (20)
years; was a charter member of the Duck Hill Lions Club, a member of the Duck Hill Masonic Lodge, and American Legion Post 52 in
Winona, where he served multiple terms as Post Commander.

Visitation will be held at the Duck Hill Baptist Church, from 11:30 A.M. until service time, on Thursday, September 7, to be immediately
followed by a funeral service at 1:00 P.M. and burial services at the Duck Hill Cemetery.

The Powell family observed James’ frustration with no treatment available to help Sarah’s deteriorating mental condition over the past 10
years due to the effect of Alzheimer’s disease.  He accumulated as much information as he could, with the hope that he could learn of the
discovery of a treatment she could undergo to reverse the loss of her memories.   Therefore, in lieu of flowers the family requests that
donations be made to The MIND Center.  Contact information is as follows: Melissa Robinson, Development Coordinator (601) 815-4299;
Office of Development, University of Mississippi Medical Center, 2500 N. State St., Jackson, MS 39216 (888) 964-4483.

Dear Sarah and family,
It is with a feeling of deep regret that we are unable to attend visitation or the funeral for James.  I have an
appointment with Dr. Renfroe that I must not cancel.  This summer I have gone through radiation for prostate cancer
and this is my first checkup after finishing treatment.  My thoughts are with all of you.  I have known James for many
years and think the world of him, he a fine man and a good friend.  You and the family will be in our prayers, not only
today but in the days to come as you adjust to his passing.  Sarah, if there is anyway that we can be of help to you,
please call, you are also a dear friend.  I will always cherish the memories of my friendship with both of you.  Again,
we are praying God's blessings on your family thru this ordeal.
So sorry for not being able to be with you.
Billy Ferguson
