Dr. Andrew M. Bailey Jr.
(September 24, 1930 - October 30, 2020)
Dr. Andrew Macklin Bailey, Jr., 90, passed away Friday, October 30, 2020.
Graveside services will be held Friday, Nov. 6th, at Oakwood Cemetery in Winona, MS, at 2 pm.
Known to many as Sonny or Doc Bailey, Dr. Bailey was born to Dr. Andie M. Bailey Sr. and Minnie Smith Bailey on
September 24, 1930. Dr. Bailey attended Mississippi State University before joining the United States Air Force
during the Korean War. While in service, Dr. Bailey continued to further his education by taking classes at Colorado
State University then the University of Cambridge and Christ College while stationed in England. Upon completing
his military service, Dr. Bailey was accepted into Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. After graduating
in 1960, Dr. Bailey joined his father in the family veterinary practice in Winona. In 1975, Dr. Bailey joined the
Federal Government Veterinary Service and moved his family to Aliceville, AL. Following many years in Government
service, Dr. Bailey moved back to Winona to rejoin the family practice and care for his aging parents. July 2020
marked the 100th anniversary of their veterinary practice serving the Montgomery and Carroll county areas of
Dr. Bailey and his parents before him, were members of Moore Memorial Methodist Church. He was a founding
board member of Winona Academy (Winona Christian School) and a very active member of the Mississippi
Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Bailey had the distinction of being one of the oldest living practicing
veterinarians in the State of Mississippi and from Auburn University, seeing animals up until the day he was
admitted to the hospital.
Dr. Bailey is survived by his wife of 66 years, Nita Carr Bailey; daughter, Nellah Bailey McGough (Kevin) of Mountain
Brook, AL; son, Andy M. Bailey III (Michelle) ofSarasota, FL; grandchildren, Matthew McGough, Patrick McGough,
Destiny Bailey, Nellah Carr Bailey, and Noni Bailey; a brother, Johnny Bailey of Germantown, TN; nephew, John
Marshall Bailey of Memphis, TN; nieces, Marcia Bailey Hampton (Phillip) of Atlanta, GA, and Laura Bailey Osborn of
Germantown, TN. He also leaves behind a host of cousins, dear friends, loyal clients, and the women who worked
with and cared for him at The Pet Station: Tina Birdsong, Dianne Rosa, Jennifer Graves, Jenny Holloway, and
Cassandra Graves. We want to thank Jenni Satchfield Busby with Friends of Grenada Animal Shelter for finding
homes for all the cats and dogs that had been abandoned at The Pet Station.
Doc Bailey was known for his love of Jesus Christ, his kindness, humor, and storytelling. He’d help anyone who
asked and will be sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved him. We are comforted in the fact that he is now
resting in the arms of Jesus. John 14:6

How I am going to miss your goofy self! I love you doc until we meet again with our Lord and Savior. You were like a
daddy to me you always were there to listen to us and I'm sure going to miss you! Oh I love you so deeply dearly oh I
could write a page about you. You were always there for us with an open ear you were there for everybody you're
going to be deeply missed. I love you.
Oh doc im gonna miss you so so much you always told me to always smile and I've been trying but it's just so hard... I
wish i could go back one more day to wash your clothes or to just sit and talk to you about everything and hearing
your stories...you were the best vet there ever was!! And I know there so many that wish you could look at their dog or
cat one last time... I love you so much doc and gonna miss you like crazy I lost apart of me when we lost you doc.. You
wasn't just a boss to me you were family to me doc!!
Youre going to be missed Dr. Bailey! Prayers for family and friends !
