A graveside service for Annie Rene Carter Armstrong of Winona will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 22 at Michie Cemetery near Vaiden. Rev. Trey Miller will officiate the service. Pallbearers will be Andrew Allen, Lee Sparks, C. J. Helms, Cade Ansley, Joey Ansley, E. J. Swims, and Brennan Jones. Honorary pallbearers will be Colton Ware, Danny Varnes Jr., Billy Carter, and David Blaylock.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Oliver Funeral Home.
Annie Rene Carter Armstrong, 89, passed away Sunday, January 18, 2026, at Winona Manor Nursing Home. She was born in Vaiden to Walter and Alma Devine Carter on April 1, 1936. She was a retired homemaker but also was a babysitter to numerous children and a caregiver to many. She enjoyed quilting and sewing. She was of Baptist faith, attending Shiloh Baptist Church in Vaiden as a child and also Hays Creek Baptist Church near Lodi.
She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Ladner of Winona; two sons, Mike Armstrong of Grenada and Jeff Armstrong of Winona; ten grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earnest LaVerne “Shorty” Armstrong; daughter, Janie Armstrong Ansley; two sons, Dennis Roan Armstrong and Earnest Lamar “Marty” Armstrong; grandson, Kenneth Ansley; great-great-granddaughter, Mary Blair Sparks; two sisters, Wilma Jean Carter and Katherine Morehead; and brother, Melvin Carter.
Annie Rene was a second mother to Danny and me. We spent a lot of time there playing with Dennis and Brenda. We loved her and LaVene very much. They are our second family.
