Barney E. Morgan

January 24, 1933 – February 7, 2026

Funeral services for Barney E. Morgan of Winona will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 13 in the Oliver Chapel, with burial following in Kilmichael Friendship Cemetery in Kilmichael. Mr. Matthew Gressett and Rev. Larry Franklin will officiate the services. Pallbearers will be Allen Gressett, Matthew Gressett, Aubrey Gilmer, David Lovell, Jeremy Woods, and Joseph Berry. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Gressett, Larry Franklin, Michael Ballard, Bubba Shaw, and Charles Mccrary.

Visitation will be Thursday, February 12 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Oliver Funeral Home; and Friday, February 13 from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Barney E. Morgan, 93, of Winona passed away at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson on Saturday, February 7, 2026. He was born in Kilmichael to Balfour and Eunia Morgan on January 24, 1933. After graduating high school from Big Black near Kilmichael, he enlisted in the United States Army and began one of the proudest eras of his life. He proudly served in the Korean Conflict and earned several medals for his service. He was awarded Unit Soldier of the Month in November of 1955 and was runner up for his entire post. He was recognized as a life member of American Legion Post 1776 in Cleveland, MS.

After his military service, he entered civilian life working for US Sugar, where he retired in 1995. A man of service, shortly after his retirement, he began serving the people of Winona as Animal Resource Officer, or as everyone knew him as, “The Dog Catcher”. Earlier in his life, as many young men from Kilmichael do, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping. Later in life, he became an avid reader. He was an avid fan of Ole Miss football and was a member of North Winona Baptist Church.

He is survived by his three daughters, Beverly Gressett (Mike) of Cleveland, Shelia Gilmer of WInona, and Cheryl Franklin (Larry) of Grenada; his son, Barry Morgan of Olive Branch; eight grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Faith Pullen Morgan; and two sisters, Lois Inez Halford and Betty Alene Deaton.

  1. Barney and Faye were friends for many years to me and my family. I can still see him playing his guitar and singing. Love to the girls and Barry.
