Ernest “Sonny” Downs

Graveside services for Ernest “Sonny” Downs of Vaiden will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 28, at Michie Cemetery in Vaiden. Rev. Doug Warren will officiate the service. Pallbearers will be Dan Carter, Jon Pierce, Bill Downs, Kenny King, Tim King, and John Lumbley.

Visitation will be Saturday, January 28, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Oliver Funeral Home.

Ernest “Sonny” Downs, 88, passed away at Baptist Medical Center – Attala in Kosciusko on Wednesday, January 25, 2023. He was born in Coila to Henry and Myrtle Gordon Downs on July 8, 1934. He was a retired road foreman for Carroll County and also a “Jack of All Trades”. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Vaiden and a U.S. Army Veteran. He loved his grandchildren and being outside whether he was cutting grass, fishing, or hunting. He enjoyed attending church with his church family at Shiloh.

Sonny is survived by his wife, Carolyn King Downs of Vaiden; two daughters, Sharon Hornsby of Sumter, SC and Crystal Rose Pierce (Jon) of Vaiden; son, Bill Downs (Angie) of Coila; seven grandchildren, Lani Mulvill (Brent) of Jefferson, Josh Story of Coila, Brittany Hornsby and John Hornsby, both of Sumter, SC, and Hope Pierce, Gracie Pierce, and Callie Pierce all of Vaiden; three great-grandchildren, Anna Leigh Mulvill of Jefferson and Caiden Hutcheson and Anniston Hutcheson, both of Sumter, SC; two sisters, Sue Dotcox of Greenwood and Sue Anthony of Senatobia; brother, Johnny Downs (Linda) of Livingston, TX; and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters; and five brothers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Shiloh Baptist Church or to the Michie Cemetery Fund.
