Helen Ruth Chesteen Stevens

August 2, 1944 – October 3, 2025

Helen Ruth Chesteen Stevens, the daughter of Henry Davis and Elvie Lacey Chesteen, passed away on October 3, 2025, at the age of 81. Helen was born on August 2, of 1944 in Kosciusko, Mississippi.  Helen grew up in the Poplar Creek community and graduated from Kilmichael High School in 1962.  Helen was the mother of three sons:  Carlos Eugene Pruitt Jr., Cecil Dwaine Pruitt, and Ricky Stevens. Helen held residences across MS, TN, MO, AZ, and NC.   She spent her last 18 years in North Carolina.

Helen Stevens spent her life working hard.  She supported her sons as they grew.  She worked into her later years and spent her last few years still giving to others.  She was an active participant with the YMCA Silver Sneakers at Cherryville, NC.  She enjoyed making meals and treats and exercising with her friends.  She enjoyed the fruits and laughter of grandchildren and great grandchildren until her time on this world was done.

Helen attended church at Venture Church of Dallas, NC where she grew in her faith and her knowledge of Christ.   She leaves behind a church that remembers her fondly.  Helen also leaves behind three sons, eight grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.

Helen’s graveside memorial service will be held at Poplar Creek Nations Baptist Church located at 54 Nations Road, Kilmichael, MS 39747 at 11AM on November 8th, 2025.   Thoughts, prayers, and cards are appreciated but flowers minimal please.

  1. Helen was like a mother to us younger ladies at the YMCA at Cherryville NC. We became close friends soon as we met. I will cherish our time together,and miss her deeply.May God Bless you all with Comfort knowing your mother loved her whole family.

  2. Goodbye Aunt Helen! Thank you for hosting my wedding shower along with my Aunt San and Aunt Yvonne back in 1989! You were sweet to me. I have fond memories of you.
