Joan J. Mitchell

June 30, 1934 – February 20, 2021

Mrs. Joan J. Mitchell, 86, of Winona passed away at her home on Saturday, February 20, 2021.  She was born on June 30, 1934, and was the daughter of the late Travis and Ann Johnson and the late Ouida Ward Parker.  She was a homemaker and a member of Moore Memorial United Methodist Church in Winona, and its Open Door Sunday School Class.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Mitchell was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Robert E. “Doc” Mitchell; great-granddaughter, Nowell Defenbaugh; and a brother, James Michael Johnson.

Mrs. Mitchell is survived by one son, Bert Mitchell (Lisa) of Winona; three daughters, Regina Mitchell Ingram (David) of Winona, Melissa Mitchell King (Ken) of Winona, and Dawn Mitchell Yeoman of Winona; two brothers, William Travis Johnson of Winona and Bobby Joe Johnson of Winona; nine grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Mitchell was a gentle lady who loved her family with all she had.  Her joy was preparing Sunday lunch for all of them.  She also enjoyed making memorable quilts for people, cross-stitching, and reading.

A funeral service for Mrs. Mitchell will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 28, in the Oliver Funeral Home Chapel, with burial following in Oakwood Cemetery in Winona.  Rev. Chad Bowen and Rev. Howard Beam will offficiate the services.  Pallbearers will be Mitch King, Carl Mitchell, Matthew Griffin, Braden Stanford, Trager Yeoman, Guy Stanford, Bill Defenbaugh, and Wesley Beardain.  Robbie Mitchell will serve as honorary pallbearer.

A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, from 1:00 p.m. until service time.

All visitors are asked to wear a mask and to observe all social distancing guidelines.
