John William “Dub” Pope, passed away on July 8, 2021, at his residence in North Carrollton at the age of 78. He is now in heaven with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
On June 23, 1943, John was born in Vaiden, Mississippi-a community that has always held a special place in his heart. In 1960, he joined the US Army, and served in both Germany and Vietnam. At the end of his active-duty military career, he remained in the reserves where he served in the Criminal Investigation Division, later retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer III.
John graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1972, before pursuing his dream of becoming a law enforcement officer. The following year he joined the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol, serving in Troop D based out of Leflore County for more than 20 years before retiring as the Public Relations Officer.
John was a 49-year member of North Carrollton Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. John graced others with a friendly personality. He never met a stranger, and he loved to talk. He took a genuine interest in people and was a brave and selfless man. John left behind a strong legacy of faith and hope, which will impact many generations to come.
John was a dedicated husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carolyn Noland Pope of North Carrollton, and his three children – Jessica Meadows (Sean) of Clinton, Mississippi; Allison Carpenter (Casey) of Carrollton, Mississippi; and Chris Pope (Kate) of Pope, Mississippi; 9 grandchildren – Lauren Goss Cox (Austin), Sarah-Grace Galey, Abigail Meadows, Maddox Carpenter, Mary Aston Carpenter, Meredith Carpenter, Elijah Pope, Luke Pope, and Joy Pope; and one greatgrandchild – Easton Cox. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Woodward of Vaiden, Mississippi, and brother Ed Pope (Linda) of Eskridge, Mississippi. John was preceded in death by his father, Lois Pope; his mother, Louise Pope, his brother, Danny Pope, and his sister, Francis Breland.
Visitation will be held Saturday, July 10, 2021, at North Carrollton Baptist Church from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. On Sunday, July 11, visitation will begin at 2:00 pm, with the funeral service at 3:00pm, immediately followed by graveside services.

John was a good friend and was so Helpful when I started http://www.vaiden.net. He was always smiling and friendly and treated everyone with the respect they deserved. He will be missed. Prayers to the family in this time of sorrow.

Patrol school and our years together as troopers would not have been the same without John Pope as one of my best friends. He was such an inspiration to others in all aspects. R. I. P. My Brother.

I went to school with John at Ole Miss and later worked with him at the training academy in Pearl! He was a great guy and friend!

Just heard of John’s passing today. My heart breaks for his family. The Pope family and the Ellis family were neighbors. He was such a good young man back then and through out his life. My brothers Albert and Wayne were pals with John. He never forgot his home place and the friends he made there. He had BIG shoes to fill. So sorry I did not get to know his family. May our Lord Jesus grant you peace today and the days to come.
