Katherine Weis Melton

Services for Katherine Weis Melton of Vaiden will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6 in the Oliver Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Vaiden Cemetery. Rev. Dennis Gossett will officiate the services. Pallbearers will be Thomas E. “Ted” Hodges, Jr, Tyler W. Hodges, Stewart Hammons, Thomas E. Hodges, III, Bill Hammons, and Jonathan Barnes.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 6 from 12 noon until service time at Oliver Funeral Home.

Katherine Melton, 97, passed away peacefully, Saturday morning, April 2, 2022, at Chateau Ridgeland, in Ridgeland, MS, with her children by her side.

Katherine was born May 23, 1924, to the late Jacob and Lois Gaston Weis in Vaiden. She was a graduate of Vaiden High School and attended the University of Mississippi. She was a member of Shongalo Presbyterian Church. She retired from Holmes County Bank and Trust Company in Vaiden and was a homemaker.

Katherine dearly loved Jesus, her family, friends, and animal family. She always put the needs of others ahead of her own. She was an avid sports fan and loved to watch the Ole Miss Rebels.

Katherine is survived by her children, Terraseta Hummel (Don) of Greenwood, Camille Brown (Gary) of New York, Joseph Collins Melton, Jr. of Ridgeland; two nieces, Carol Ely of Roanoke, VA and Janet Flournoy of London, England; grandchildren, Thomas E. “Ted” Hodges, Jr. (Melissa), Tiffany Hammons (Bill), and Tyler W. Hodges (Olivia); great-grandchildren, Thomas, Mattox, and Gracie Hodges; Stewart, Katherine, Ansley, and Patrick Hammons; Tanner and Grayson Hodges; and her beloved cat, Lucky.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Collins Melton, her three sisters, Mary Weis Farmer, Ruth Weis Flournoy, and Mildred Weis Porter; her infant brother, William Jacob Weis; and three nephews, Bruce Flournoy, Travis Cox, and Richard Stuart Flournoy.

The family would like to thank the staff of both Chateau Ridgeland and Assisting Angels who helped care for Mrs. Melton and made the last six and a half years of her life more enjoyable.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shongalo Presbyterian Church, Christ’s Cross at the Crossroads, Community Animal Rescue and Adoption of Mississippi or to the charity of your choice.

  1. Catherine was a sweet and kind lady and lifelong friend of my family. She will be missed by all but we will see her again than is to the love and Grace of our Savior Jesus Christ.

    My sincerest condolences and heartfelt sympathy during this time of sadness. There is rejoicing in Heaven as it has gained another Angel.

  2. Terraseta and family. I can past your Mothers just yesterday and thought about her such a sweet pretty lady. I think back to all those years ago when she was bring you to dance class and how sweet she was to all us girls a beautiful person through and through. Y’all have been so blessed to have her for all these years and I know you are going to miss her loving thoughts and prayers for the family and you travel through this time in your lives

  3. Catherine was a sweet lady. She and my mother Helen Rosamond were good friends. When we were small.Terraseta and i would play under Catherine’s big white house in Vaiden. Condolences to all of Catherine’s family.
