Thomas Vernon Johnson

February 14, 1936 – June 24, 2025

Thomas Vernon Johnson, a beloved member of the Winona community, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2025, at the age of 89. Born to Wade and Lottie Peeples Johnson on February 14, 1936, Thomas lived a life defined by dedication—to his family and his faith.

A lifelong resident of Winona, Thomas was a renowned cattleman, spanning over 70 years in the business. He worked for the Mississippi Department of Agriculture as a Livestock Market Reporter, retiring from there after 22 years of service. He was known for his generous spirit, and unwavering commitment to those around him. Always willing to share his knowledge of the cattle business, he lived by the values of integrity, humility, and love.

Thomas is survived by his children Jeff (Renee) Johnson of Brandon, Brad (Janelle) Johnson of Winona, and Shane (Olivia) Johnson of Hurley. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Bailee Johnson Williams, Tanner Johnson, Emma Wicks, Macy Johnson, Ethan Wicks and Reese Johnson. He also leaves behind his treasured great-grandchildren, Braylynn Lofton, Camden Mercier, Jax Bergeron, Landry Kate Williams and Anthonio Knox Johnson. He is survived by his sister, Annette Mills, of Winona and special friend, Shirley Rogers. Thomas was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Sarah Putman Johnson, Burma Vail (sister) of Winona, Wade Johnson (brother) of Winona, and his granddaughter, Jessica Lofton of Brookhaven.

His life’s work was not found in titles or accolades, but in the relationships he nurtured and the community he quietly served. Thomas had an enduring impact on all who knew him, and his presence will be deeply missed.

A celebration of Thomas’s life will be held at New Hope Global Methodist Church in Winona on Friday, June 27, 2025. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. until service time at 12:00 p.m., with interment following at New Hope Cemetery. Rev. Gene Richards and Rev. Dennis Giger will officiate the service. Pallbearers will be Tanner Johnson, Reese Johnson, Ethan Wicks, Bill Vail, Michael Vail, and Phil Johnson. The family invites friends and loved ones to join them in remembering a man who lived simply, gave generously, and loved deeply.

  2. I will surely miss seeing Mr. Johnson at the coffee shop. Always enjoyed a sit down and conversation with him. He was a very kind soul.
