Toby Lee Steed, Sr., 78, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2026, in Starkville, Mississippi.
Born on June 25, 1947, in Attalla County, he was the youngest of three sons of Newton Virgil and Hilda Mae (Cummins) Steed. He was raised in Parchman, Mississippi, where his father worked as a prisoner transport officer.
Toby was known for being a hard worker and for the many roles he held throughout his life. He spent many years working for Scott Petroleum, delivering fuel across the Delta, and traveled extensively as an eighteen-wheeler driver. Earlier in life, he operated a bread delivery route and worked as a repo man.
He found joy in the outdoors through squirrel hunting and fishing; he also enjoyed his trips to the casino. When his sons were young, he was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader. More than anything, he treasured time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him immense pride and happiness. He also shared a special bond with his beloved dog, Teddy, who remained a loyal companion.
Toby’s life was marked by perseverance. He was especially proud of achieving 35 years of sobriety through Alcoholics Anonymous, where he remained active and dedicated to helping others by sharing his journey and offering encouragement. His commitment to supporting others was a lasting reflection of his commitment. He was a member of Webb Baptist Church in Webb, Mississippi.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lyn (Hoover) Steed; his parents, Newton Virgil and Hilda Mae Steed; his brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Mary Steed of Parchman; and his brother, Donald Mac Steed of Indianola.
He is survived by his sons and their families, Kevin and Stephanie Steed of Grenada, Toby and Dawn Steed, Jr. of Starkville, and Chris and Mandy Steed of Hamilton, and; his grandchildren, Audriana (Shawn) Walworth, Allen (Anna) Baty, Katie-Noelle (Taylor) Faulkner, Loren (David) Dunn, Abby (Toby) Young, Leggett (Clayton) Lin, Sadie Steed, Dalton Steed, and Ella Steed; and his great-grandchildren, Ethan Walworth, Ivy and Decker Baty, Blaire and Beau Dunn, Colt, Collson and Cayden Young, and Leighton Faulkner, and Callan Lin, expected this summer. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Linda Steed, and numerous nieces and nephews. As well his best friend of over sixty years, Henry Topps.
The family extends sincere appreciation to his dear friends, Bill Waldrup, Lessie Kent, William & Pamela McClellan, and Lisa Burton, for their help, support, and kindness over the past several months.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Oliver Funeral Home of Winona, 113 Liberty Street, Winona, MS. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm, with the funeral services at 3:00 pm in the chapel.
